Álvaro Cárcamo-Martínez joined Boehringer Ingelheim in 2021 as Research Scientist in the Drug Discovery Sciences (DDS) department. His primary role involves developing pre-clinical formulations, where he has previously focused on formulations for intravitreal sustained release and for local administration of oligonucleotides. In addition, Álvaro serves as CMC representative on cross-functional projects during the research stage. Currently, his research is centred around developing oral formulations that enable high exposure of PROTACs. Álvaro obtained a pharmacist degree from the Universidad de Chile. After completing his degree, he gained valuable industrial experience working for two years in the regulatory affairs department of Novartis Chile. Following this, he pursued a PhD at Queen's University Belfast (UK), supported by a Marie-Sklodowska Curie Fellowship, graduating in 2021. During his doctoral studies, he focused on the utilization of polymeric microneedles as an enhancing technology for intradermal drug delivery as well as a photothermal medical device when in combination with gold nanorods.
